How to Use Mirrors and Lighting to Make Your Home Look Bigger

Do you have a small space? We all know how much more crucial interior decor and furniture arrangement can be to a small space where we’re trying to do our best to bring the feeling of a greater space to a small space. The reason why this is so important is that it can feel very uncomfortable to sit in a small space as those of us with a healthy dose of claustrophobia can attest. John Carpenter, a sydney based mirror consultant with Majestic Glass – Custom Mirrors, says that the most inexpensive ways to open up a room and make it feel bigger are strategic lighting and the use of mirrors.

Part 1: Lighting

room-lighting

It has always been known that light has a way of making a room look much bigger than it really is. This works particularly well when the walls are light and colored brightly. The last thing you want in a small room is a bunch of dark walls. They’ll absorb the very light and soul of the room and make it seem much smaller. Meanwhile, brightly colored walls can accentuate the effect of natural light and make the room feel much more open.

Even so, there are specific colors that work way better than others, such as green, blue, and off-white. Go for the brightest versions of these colors, and you will be pleasantly surprised at the result.

You can go even further and paint your moldings and wall trim in a lighter color than the rest of your walls. The result is that the walls seem to be at a greater distance than the trims and moldings. This makes your room look bigger.

The next step is to make maximum use of natural lighting to get the kind of effect you’re looking for. Natural lighting has a remarkable way of making a space feel bigger. If you have large windows, you’re better off as these will allow plenty of natural light into the house.

Large windows have a way of connecting the inside and the outside, making your space feel like it is unbounded by the walls. You can go for light window coverings, such as sheer ones if you would like to cover your windows or have no coverings at all. A few potted plants near the window will make the effect even more powerful.

Part 2: Mirrors

Mirrors are also an effective way to expand your room and make it look larger. The best thing is to have some kind of focal point and have your mirrors angled toward that focal point. This brings about the illusion of depth to the room.

Mirrors also have a reflective quality that allows them to interact with both artificial and natural light in ways that make the room seem a lot brighter both during the day and at night. Mirrors bounce the light around much deeper than it would have gone on its own, making the room seem a lot larger.

You can also improve upon both of these by having a vanity mirror with lights which helps add light and also reflect natural light around the room.

You can also place rooms in hallways to make them seem larger. Hallways, while not exactly rooms, are also prone to feeling small. In tiny rooms, a mirror near the window, on a tabletop, or strategically placed on a wall can do wonders to the openness of the room. The same also works for closet and cabinet doors with mirrors in them.
