You’ve just received your motorcycle license and have purchased your first bike. Now you’re super excited to plan your first motorcycle road trip, but don’t know where to start. Don’t worry, this article will help you to plan a flawless road trip. From rest stops, to places to sleep: this guide will cover everything you need to know about planning a motorcycle road trip alone or with a group.
Make sure you bring all your gear
The first and probably most important thing to consider is that you need to bring all the gear you might need. Start by making a list a week before the trip, which will give you time to add things you might have forgotten since you started the list. Important gear includes your outfit, including motorcycle helmets, jackets, gloves, boots, extra shirts, neck protectors, sun visors, etc. If you’re traveling in a group, consider bringing a motorcycle helmet that has an integrated Bluetooth communication system, so you can communicate when you want to take a break or stop for another reason.
Besides your clothing, it is important to bring sufficient material that will allow you to conduct emergency repairs while you’re on the road. A tool set with enough wrenches to tighten parts that have come loose, a tire repair set, a glue set for gluing back loose mirrors, and an air pump for your tires are a must. While you’re at it, make sure to buy enough motorcycle bags to be able to take all the stuff that you need during your road trip.
Bring enough supplies
While you’re making your packing list, make a list of all the food and drinks you need to buy as well. You’ll probably be making a lot of rest stops at gas stations where you can stock up, but in the case that a stop is closed or you can’t make it there, it is important to have some emergency supplies with you. Stock up on water bottles, protein bars, and other snacks, such as sandwiches, nuts and fruit. Besides food, you may want to bring supplies to find your way, such as a map, compass, or a GPS unit. They will be helpful in case that there is no internet where you are going. A power bank will keep your phone charges so that you can call the emergency number should you need it.
Plan out the route
Now, it’s time to plan out the route. On the Internet you’ll find plenty of examples of road trip routes in your area. Would you like to take a specific route? Then it is important to keep in mind the hours that you are willing to ride and the time you need to visit landmarks. Also, keep in mind the hours of daylight that you have if you don’t want to ride in the dark. Besides landmarks, it is also important to plan out rest stops. Rest stops will give you the opportunity to stretch your legs and to power up by eating and drinking something. Don’t forget to fuel your bike if you’re stopping at a gas station.
Are you going on a multi-day road trip? Then book your hotel, campsite, or other accommodation in advance so that you can be sure that there is space. There is nothing worse than arriving at your planned accommodation at night, only to find out that there is no room or place available. If you’re staying at a campsite, don’t forget to bring a tent, air mattress, sleeping bag, cooking gear, and other important camping material.
