Getting a commercial driver’s license (CDL) can be an excellent step for those of us who love to drive and would like to be able to make a living out of it. Apart from the actual CDL training, there are various other steps you need to take to obtain this highly coveted license.
Depending on the state you’re in, the requirements for obtaining a CDL license is slightly different. However, there are four basic steps that you can expect to go through in every state, with only slight variations.
Have All CDL Requirements
To start with, you should make sure you meet all the CDL requirements for your state. These are what determine if you qualify to get a CDL or not. Some of these requirements may need you to be at least a certain age and meet some minimum physical requirements. Meeting all of the requirements for your state ensures that the application process for a driver’s license is smooth for you. You can find out the requirements on your state’s government website.
Get a CDL Permit
This part of the process is pretty much like the one for getting a regular driver’s license. A CDL permit essentially gives you the permission to move forward with the rest of the process. To get a Class A CDL permit, you have to pass a few written tests. These typically include general knowledge combination vehicles and air brakes in most states. You can find a CDL manual or handbook on each state’s website easily.
Obtain CDL Endorsements
Depending on the endorsement you’re looking for, you will need to pass a written CDL endorsement test. There are endorsements, however, that also require a background check before you can have them added to your CDL. A good example of such an endorsement is the Hazardous Materials Endorsement (HAZMAT). You can find additional information in the endorsements section of the CDL manual.
Take CDL Skills Test
For you to pass your CDL driving test, you need to complete an exam that comes in three parts: a pre-trip inspection test, followed by a basic control skills test and, finally, a driving test. The final part, the driving test, occurs either at a state CDL test site or third-party test site that has been approved by your state. Once you have passed the skills test, you can be issued with a formal CDL from your state.
The Importance of CDL Training School
The best way to get your CDL is to go to a training school. There are plenty of people out there who try to do it themselves. However, most of them only end up realizing that there’s much more to driving a long-haul or 18-wheel vehicle than meets the eye. By getting proper formal CDL training, you will gain all the information and skills you need to pass the written CDL test as well as the skills test. This makes the process of obtaining a CDL much easier for you and drastically increases your chances of success. Also, future employers who are actively using DOT compliance services would look be more likely to hire truckers with proper training to decrease compliance issues.
