Electricity is seen as a necessity and often taken for granted. The days of regular power cuts are generally in the past and only excessive demand or violent storms threaten your supply.
Unfortunately this often leads to people forgetting to check their electrical systems. This can result in a catastrophic failure in your home and a very expensive repair bill.
It is far better to have your electrics regularly inspected by a qualified electrician in Sydney to ensure everything is as it should be.
Even if you aren’t using an electrical contractor at the moment, you should become familiar with one; if the following problems start to occur at home then you’re likely to need their services:
Burning Smell
If you turn on an appliance and notice a burning smell then you may have an issue.
You should immediately turn off the appliance and then carefully smell it. IF the smell does not appear to be originating from the item then you may have an issue in your electrics.
You can try plugging something else in; if you get the same odor then get an electrician in!
Light Bulbs Blowing
Light bulbs to reach the end of their life and start blowing. However, if you suddenly start to experience lots of your bulbs blowing or the same one repeatedly then it is likely that you have an issue that needs to be looked at.
The probably issue is a bad live or neutral that is touching the other, shorting the circuit and blowing the bulb. It could also be excess power at the light or even an overrated bulb being used.
The same can also be true if your lights flicker often; this indicates a problem with the wiring to the light and is something that you should have checked out as soon as possible.
Get Shocking
If you feel a mild electric shock when you plug something in then there is a problem with the socket or circuit. It is likely that the circuit has developed an earth fault although there are other potential issues.
If this happens more than once you should avoid using the socket until an electrician has taken a look. You should also never touch them with wet hands.
Circuit Breaker Issues
Circuit breakers are designed to trip to save you from getting an electric shock. This can happen for no particular reason from time to time.
However if a circuit breaker keeps tripping then you need to investigate further. It could be the result of plugging in a specific appliance. Or, it could be an issue with the electrical wiring. It may even be you overloading the circuit.
Whatever the cause it is important to look into it further.
Sockets Not Working
If the power is on and the breaker hasn’t been tripped but a socket doesn’t work then it is highly likely that there is a problem with the wiring.
It is safest to shut the power off to the circuit and get it inspected and fixed; this type of issue can easily cause a short in the circuit and potential a fire in your home.
