The state of Massachusetts is full of history and natural beauty and is known as the heart of American democracy. It’s full of natural beauty, famous historical sites, and activities to satisfy everyone. There’s so much to do, see, and explore on a trip to Massachusetts that planning ahead is a very good idea. Someone might want to explore the Appalachian Trail for a few miles, while another family member might prefer to check out Martha’s Vineyard and sunbathe on the beaches in Nantucket. Here are some tips to help you plan your Massachusetts vacation and get as much in as possible.
Stay in the Metro Areas
Massachusetts is home to famous cities that include Boston and Cambridge. Boston is rich in historical sites such as the location of the Boston Tea Party, the Kennedy Library, and Paul Revere’s home where he began his midnight ride. There’s no end to the number of historical sites for history buffs of all stripes. Then there are the historic Swan Boats of Boston that take visitors on a ride around the Boston Public Garden lagoon for a change in the historical experience. The boat rides originated in 1877, and each trip lasts around 15 minutes.
Don’t forget to check out Cambridge on the other side of the Charles River from Boston. Walk around the campuses of Massachusetts Institute of Technology or head over to Harvard Square at Harvard University to check out the bookstores and cafes that abound there. You’ll find some great Cambridge hotels, too.
See the Natural Beauty of the State
The National Park Service operates a diverse array of sites across the state. They range from the Blackstone River Valley to the Appalachian Trail. If there’s no time to get out of Boston proper, take a trip to the Boston Harbor Islands and explore the Civil War-era structures, hike along the trails, and even do some camping. Martha’s Vineyard is an island that’s been considered a summer playground for centuries and is only accessible by boat or air. It’s also home to lighthouses that still light the way for fishermen returning home from the sea.
Play on the Beaches
Cape Cod consists of 40 miles of beaches, ponds, marshes, and uplands that provide living space for a diverse group of flora and fauna. Explore the wild cranberry bogs or do some fishing from the shore during open season. Just make sure to get a permit before casting a line. Cape Cod is another excellent location for exploring the saltwater and freshwater beaches of Massachusetts and has the additional interest of the Kennedy Compound and the Kennedy Trail. It’s also possible to ride bikes along some beaches or head out when the surf is up on others.
Massachusetts has a wealth of activities for everyone. Take the family on a trip to learn more about the nation’s history or explore one of the few urban environments that dates back to the time of the American Revolution. There’s no end to the interesting things to do or see while in Massachusetts.
