National Doctors’ Day! Thank You All for your Service

Doctor’s Day is specifically meant to celebrate and thank Doctors for their selfless service who are demigods for most of us. Vaidyo Narayano Hari is one famous sayings about Doctors that describes how well they are considered as Gods in our country.

The celebration of the Doctors’ Day is an attempt to emphasize on the value of doctors in our lives and to offer them our respects by commemorating one of their greatest representatives. Being trapped in the uncomfortable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for hours every day, treating COVID and non-COVID patients, taking online consultation, dealing with the shortage of medical supplies and staff, keeping up with everyday developments in the field of COVID-19 research, the pandemic has been hard on the doctors. During this long fight with COVID, the country has lost over 1,500 doctors to the pandemic, according to IMA. This includes 736 doctors during the first wave and 798 doctors since the first week of April till June 29. The highest number of deaths among doctors have been reported from Delhi (128), followed by Bihar (115). It is important to note here that the actual figure related to death of doctors during COVID-19 may be higher as IMA only keeps a record of its 3.27 lakh members. With an aim to dedicate the day to the doctors who succumbed to COVIID – 19, the theme of the day this year is ‘Save The Saviours’.

Attacks on Doctors:

Unfortunately people have very high expectations on Doctors and come to a stage that they feel all diseases can be cured. With the latest technological advances in recent times the doctors are able to treat diseases more successfully but sadly there are instances where doctors could not save the patients in spite of their best efforts.

Their could be many reasons for the failure, due to the condition of the patient when he was brought to the doctor, or age of the patient or other constitutional factors or coincidental chronic illness or the incurable nature of the disease or due to the limited knowledge and skill of the doctor – the doctor is held responsible for the failure. It is but natural that when the patients die their relations and friends are profoundly upset and in their distress hold the doctors responsible for the result and treat the doctors as devils.

Recently one incident happened in West Bengal that shook the entire nation. On June 11, 2019, a furious mob of 200 assaulted and seriously wounded Dr. Paribaha Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Yash Tekwani at NRS Medical College Hospital, Kolkata. The result of the gruesome attack by an angry mob on the young Dr. Mukhopadhyay — a skull fracture — are there for all to see on the internet.

“He had suffered acute cardiac arrest and in the evening the patient developed arrhythmia or irregular heart beats. Several injections were administered but he died,” a junior doctor said.

“Soon after the relatives were told about the death, they started abusing our colleagues and alleged negligence in treatment. Three of them entered the ward and pushed the female interns.”

The three persons who pushed and abused the interns went away.

“When the relatives returned to take away the body, my colleagues demanded an apology from the three who had assaulted them,” a doctor said.

Two persons with the relatives apologized but they were not the ones who had assaulted the doctors. The doctors stuck to their demand and a small team of cops arrived from the outpost on the campus.

“The relatives are alleging we did not allow them to take the body away but that is not true. The body was sent for postmortem because they alleged negligence,” another junior doctor said. “While leaving, the assaulters threatened that the doctors would be thrashed again later.”

These unfortunate events are happening in many places around the globe. The government should punish unlawful behavior of anybody who harms the doctor and vandalizes the hospital. In the same way if Doctors were found guilty in treating (pure negligence) or Hospitals find cheating the patients by taking advantage of their helpless situations, they should be severely punished as well.
