India is a large and varied country, with each of its states having its own distinctive cuisine, as well as slightly different cultures and of course a whole new landscape to explore. This is part of what makes India such a popular tourist destination. It gives people the opportunity to escape their everyday life and experience a culture that’s totally different from what they’re used to. If you’re lucky enough to be planning a trip to India then there are a few important things to bear in mind. We’ve got a list of practical advice that will make sure that your dream Indian adventure doesn’t turn into a nightmare.
Understand New Laws
It’s important to make sure you remain on the right side of the law whatever country you’re in but this can be more difficult in countries where the laws differ from what you’re used to. In India, there are different laws depending on the state that you’re in, for example, in Bihar Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland it is illegal to consume alcohol, so any poolside cocktails that you were planning on will have to be alcohol-free. There can be serious consequences to alcohol consumption, sometimes up to ten years imprisonment. However, if you are keen to enjoy a glass of wine whilst you’re away then in some states it is possible to apply for holiday 30-day alcohol permits. Smoking is banned too, as well as E-cigarettes in all parts of India except in designated areas in hotels and airports. A final note for gamers is that only certain states in India permit gambling. You’ll find casinos in states like Goa, but you won’t find them almost anywhere else. This means that if you want to keep up your casino gaming hobby then you’ll need to look online instead. Asiabet has an extensive guide to online casinos in India including safe and legal ones to use, as well as a breakdown of which casinos offer the best user experience.
Book in Your Inoculations

Unlike traveling to most of Europe or within the United States, there are certain diseases that are prevalent in India that you will need to be inoculated against. Some of these are present across the whole country, some in rural areas only and some only in certain states, so it is up to you to look at where you’re traveling and book accordingly. Within your package, you might need to be vaccinated against Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Some travelers also choose to get vaccinated against Hepatitis B and Rabies though these are optional for all parts of India. Speak to your doctor at least two months ahead of the date of your travel and they will be able to put together a vaccination plan for you to ensure that your trip runs smoothly and you remain healthy.
Get Great Sleep on the Plane
If you’re having to take a long-haul flight to get to India then don’t underestimate how much time you’re going to have to fill. Arriving at the airport without a plan for your flight is destined to end in you being incredibly bored. Night flights are the perfect way to get a sleep routine set up for when you arrive. Look at the time difference between where you are and where you’re flying to and then plan when you’d ideally like to be waking up. Make your flight your first night of getting used to the time difference by investing in some noise-canceling earphones that you can listen to sea noises, white noise, or whatever else you find relaxing through. A sleep mask will also help you to sleep more soundly by blocking out your neighbor’s reading light and any blue light from the in-flight entertainment screens. Try to avoid looking at your phone screen for an hour before you try to get to sleep, as this will help your circadian rhythm to kick in. Hopefully, you’ll arrive at your destination feeling well rested and you’ll have staved off at least some of the effects of jet lag.
