Our home is our castle and keeping a family-size home spotlessly clean is virtually impossible, unless it happens to be a full-time job. Working smarter, not harder has to be the way to go, and with that in mind, we scoured the web to present you with cool house-cleaning hacks that everyone should know.
Work with gravity
Sounds a bit obvious, right? Some homeowners forget that dust settles; when you clean a room, cover all furniture, then get your extended duster and start with the ceiling, making sure to clean around light fittings and all corners. Once this is done, take a short break and let the dust settle, then carefully remove the dust sheets and you can start cleaning items.
Place doormats at the front and back doors
Aside from a welcoming gesture, doormats are there to capture dirt, grime and residue that gathers on the soles of the shoes. You would be surprised at how much grime comes in on the soles of shoes; this is why Asian people remove their shoes before entering a dwelling.
Clean by room
Take the kitchen as an example, the busiest room in the house; start by putting away the toaster, coffee machine and blender, then cover worktops and major appliances and do an extreme dust and wipe. Combine the kitchen cleaning with an oven cleaning service, spend time cleaning all kitchen appliances, large and small, paying close attention to underneath appliances like the fridge, washing machine and oven. You should be able to finish any room in a single day, then when all is done, you can target the upper and lower halls and staircase, then the house is done!
Annual spring clean
We recommend using a professional house cleaning contractor for the yearly deep clean. Take the family for a picnic at a nearby park and when you get home, your home will be spotless. You are far less likely to be invaded by pests if you deep clean often; insects like dirt and grime and will not make home in a spotless environment. The carpets can be wet cleaned, while all upholstery can also be cleaned with the right pro gear and let’s not forget blinds and curtains.
Delegate domestic tasks
If you are the head of a family, make sure your kids are responsible for their own bedrooms; tasks such as washing the dishes and emptying the trash can be given on a weekly or monthly rota basis.
If you have a long weekend and you have no plans, why not organise yourself for a deep clean at home? Hire a small skip for all the waste you will find (it’s amazing what a family home can contain) and when you have finished, enjoy an ice-cold beer, sit back and admire your handiwork.
