Whether you are a hardcore golfer looking to try out some new courses near to the Big Smoke or you just fancy the idea of planning a golf themed weekend in London, there is plenty for you to add to your itinerary. In fact, it would seem that the rest of London is also jumping on the golfing craze if the number of crazy golf courses which have popped up all over the city in recent years is anything to go by.
So why not imagine yourself the new Tiger Woods and head to one of the following courses in London, followed by a visit to one of the nearby popular attractions, to really make the most of your time in the city: –
Swingers
Located just steps from the iconic Gherkin building, Swingers is a 1920s-style golf club set in the rural countryside; or so the interior would have you believe. Swingers offers many things to visitors including five cocktail bars, three street-food vendors, a two storey clubhouse with a gin terrace and live music performances from DJs every night. In keeping with its design it is also home to two custom-built nine hole crazy golf courses. Swingers is open from midday until late so it doesn’t matter whether you want to include a trip here as part of a golf themed night out or you want to enjoy some quirky crazy golf in the heart of the city as part of your sightseeing; Swingers has got you covered. There is a dress code to bear in mind however, fancy dress is a no-no and Swingers encourage guests to dress for cocktails with golfing attire being thoroughly encouraged.
Nearby Attraction: Once you have played your rounds of crazy golf, make sure you check out the Monument to the Great Fire of London which is less than 10 minutes walk away. This Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren (who also designed St Paul’s Cathedral) and was built to commemorate the Great Fire of London which occurred in 1666. It is possible to climb to the top of the Monument and look out across the city, spotting familiar landmarks including the Gherkin and some of the city’s finest luxury hotels.
Junkyard Golf Club
If you fancy a trip to eclectic East London, which shouldn’t been too difficult if you are booked into one of the hotels in Central London then you have to factor in a visit to the Junkyard Golf Club which is situated in the Old Truman Brewery near to Brick Lane, Shoreditch. This is crazy golf which a probably unlike any other kind of crazy golf you’ve ever encountered before. There are three nine hole courses made with all kinds of odd bits and bobs and the courses feature slides, jacuzzis, treadmills and wendy houses to name but a few. There are also four bars and a street-food vendor on the premises if you wanted to make an evening of it.
Nearby Attraction: It would be a diabolic shame to come to Shoreditch and not check out Brick Lane itself. This is a vibrant hub in the heart of East London and is well known for its fantastic markets, top-notch coffee shops and the vintage and second-hand stores which also line Brick Lane itself and the surrounding streets. Brick Lane is also home to some of London’s best Bangladeshi and Indian curry houses so if you fancy some international cuisine then you are also in the right place.
Jurassic Encounter Adventure Golf
If you don’t mind travelling a little further afield, around an hour using public transport from The Montcalm London Marble Arch Hotel, then get ready for an adventure worthy of Michael Crichton at the Jurassic Encounter Adventure Golf course in New Malden. This course is themed to perfection with 9 life-sized (or near enough) giant dinosaurs which roar and move, cascading waterfalls and prehistoric caves and 18 holes to pit your crazy golf skills against. This is more of a family-orientated course although parties of any kind are always welcome.
Nearby Attraction: Before heading back to Central London, hop on the train and within half an hour you could be at Hampton Court Palace, one of the most recognised royal landmarks in the Greater London area. This was King Henry VIII’s favourite royal residence and it is also home to the largest hedge maze in the world which is definitely worth exploring. There is also the Great Hall which is hung with some of King Henry’s favourite tapestries and was the venue for a performance by Shakespeare’s company for King James I, the kitchens which have been restored to their Tudor glory and allow visitors to see what life would have been like when you had a royal household of 600 to feed day in and day out and the Chapel Royal which was used for over 450 years and is a stunning and tranquil part of the Palace.
Birdies Crazy Golf
Although they have yet to announce their venue for 2017 we couldn’t end this list without mentioning one of the most popular pop-up crazy golf courses to have landed in London. Birdies has been found in a number of different locations across London including an underground course in Waterloo and, their latest being the rooftop of Roof East in Stratford with a bespoke nine hole golf course featuring loops, half-pipes, and even a 5ft drop. To discover their latest location when the news is released, Birdies recommends following them on Twitter.
Golf Courses London
If crazy golf isn’t really your thing and you are instead looking to play on a proper course then there are a number of great options in London including Brent Valley Golf Club, Richmond Park Golf Club, Royal Wimbledon Golf Club and Hampstead Golf Club. From any of these you are, again, just a short distance from some of the best attractions in the city including Richmond Park, ZSL London Zoo and Westfield London.
