Whether you just want to spend the day in nature or you want to rent an RV from Outdoorsy, Maryland is a great place to spend your time. Although this state isn’t very big, there is a surprising number of beautiful outdoor spaces that are well worth your time.
You can’t go wrong, no matter which park you choose, but if you’re looking for one or two parks to get you started, try one of these.
Patapsco Valley State Park
Patapsco Valley State Park is a great place for people who want to do some walking outdoors. This park has over 200 miles of trails, 70 of which are maintained. It encompasses over 16,000 acres and offers visitors additional opportunities for:
- Fishing
- Canoeing
- Horseback riding
- Biking
If you’re doing camping, either in a tent or an RV, make the Hollofield Area your home. It features stunning views of the Patapsco River Valley and it provides easy access to a few different trails.
Gunpowder Falls State Park
Gunpowder Falls State Park is like visiting six parks in one, which makes it the perfect choice for families who are looking to make a vacation out of their time in nature.
- Check out the Prettyboy Reservoir and explore the wildlands in the Hereford Area.
- Visit the Sparks Bank Nature Center that is located on the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail.
- Explore the historic Jerusalem Mill Village and the Joppa Iron Works in the Central Area.
- Stop by the Hammerman Area for a little swimming, fishing, and archery.
- Get some fresh air by walking the 18 miles of trails in the Sweet Air Area.
- Hop on a boat at the Dundee Creek Marina near the mouth of the Gunpowder River.
Gambrill State Park
If it’s scenic views you’re after, make sure you stop at Gambrill State Park. At less than 2,000 acres, it’s not as big as some of the other parks on this list, but it makes up for its lack of size with awe-inspiring vistas.
It is located on Catoctin Mountain and features dramatic views that can easily be accessed by trails that lead to stone overlooks. It’s perfect for hikers and mountain bikers. It is also a great stop for families because the park has a playground and a small fishing pond.
Rocks State Park
If you’re looking for a heavily forested area, look no further than Rocks State Park. There are 855 acres of rocky forest to explore, which include impressive rock formations like the King and Queen Seat. Wading and tubing are also popular with visitors.
If you have the time, you should also visit Falling Branch, which is located right near the park, because it features Kilgore Falls.
Maryland may be small, but it is also mighty when it comes to beautiful parks that are perfect for visitors of all ages. Hop in your car or RV and give one of these parks a try. You’ll have so much fun you’ll want to visit another park on your way home!
