—————————————————————————————————————
I will be very happy if most of you reading this post already knew about what I am going to write, because it is something that every one of us, every Indian should know, and probably should follow. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the case. For the most part, till recently, I was also not sure (if not totally unaware) of these things. The general perception also says we can’t.
I always find it amazing when I see all those hollywood movies where there will be a US flag in front of the protagonist (or even the villian’s) home or any other place. My brief stint at some of US and other foreign places also gave me the same experience. I see lot of homes and restaurants and other places with a national flag. In fact, I wanted to show it to you all, how it looks, how it must be feeling for that country’ citizens. I searched this pic on google by “US flag in front of a home”, and also found a huge number of similar pics. Try doing a similar search for India (“Indian flag in front of a home”), you wont find a single pic with a home and a flag on it! (scrolled down for three minutes, nothing to find). Pity.
I always wanted it on top of my home, but never did so. Really don’t know why. So, on my last visit home, I had no more excuses left for myself and finally decided to have a flag on top of my home. I went out and bought a flag from one of the most unwanted Khadi shops in the town. Took some effort to find a small pole and display it. Enjoyed the full process. When I asked a shopkeeper to give a pulley to hoist, he said he doesn’t have it ready as August 15th is still far. After a while, he finally found, neatly gave it to me and asked, is there an occasion that he didn’t knew. I explained that as a citizen of India, we all are, and should display the flag at our homes, and said to him I am just trying to do that. He was still confused (or amused) when I left. Nevertheless, I returned and finished what I started. What a feeling. Instantly, I saw few neighbours coming outside and trying to understand what am I doing! Definitely August 15th is still far (it was in july). But I saw few children saluting it from distance. It can make a difference.
Please go through the first six pages of the flag code of India 2002, (http://mha.gov.in/pdfs/flagcodeofindia.pdf) where it is mentioned in detail, that all of us can hoist, in any manner which is not prohibited and causing dishonour to the flag.
Every citizen of India is (not restricted) allowed to hoist the flag, or display it at his residence/office or any other area, with taking care of the dignity of the flag, and as far as possible to un-hoist it after sunset. Please ensure that we make use of such allowances provided and show our patriotism.
To repeat, Please be advised that there is no restriction on the display of the national flag at your home/residence/office premises. If there are any apprehensions or general notions, please dispel those. You are free to use, and in fact, as a patriotic citizen of the country, one should. There was a post we made, almost four years back, and I think the subject is still relevant and unfortunately status quo continues: https://www.worthview.com/fly-tricolour-night/
Whether you are in a rented house or own home, whether in a software job, or in delhi preparing for civils, or at home enjoying the holidays, or at school taking the pledge, please make sure you take a little step and display the flag, high and with glory. Follow the flag code. Display the flag. Not just on Independence and Republic days but everyday. Implement it.
Happy August 15th. Show your patriotism, not just on FB n Blogs, but at homes and hearts as well. Always.
Jai Hind.
