Choosing a greenhouse that fits your garden perfectly is a first and momentous step for many gardeners. It’s almost like graduating to another level of the green-thumb university. There’s something about those glass structures that is romantic and professional at the same time.
If you have already decided that you’re in it for the long-haul, it might even feel like getting married – it’s a very serious step. After all, you’re deciding to put a somewhat permanent structure in your garden, one that is an investment and will affect how your garden looks and feels.
It will also change the way you manage your garden time, your growing season and what you decide to grow. But you probably knew all that. What you might have not known is how many different types of greenhouses there are. And there are a LOT.
The first greenhouses that we associate with what we can buy today come from Edwardian England and are very stylish. These were owned by the richest people in England and were built to hold tropical plant collections. You can still get a similar greenhouse today – a beautiful wooden frame, brick siding and fairy-tale shapes. This can act like a gardening space or a mix of garden and tea-house combined.
There are industrial greenhouses that are plant-production oriented. These tend to be either plastic or aluminum, dome-shaped for easy assembly. A lot of the cheaper ones are covered with plastic, and some of the better-designed ones are covered with poly-carbonate glazing.
Expect your growing time to change considerably. This is why picking a greenhouse at the end of Autumn is a very good time. You are past your prime growing season and getting ready for the spring.
Of course, that pesky winter season in between Autumn and Spring will keep you depressed for only a little bit – a greenhouse can extend your growing season by two months, and you can start growing much earlier than you’re used to.
The infographic from experts at Greenhouse Stores will help you choose the perfect greenhouse for you – you might be surprised by how accommodating they can be, even in small spaces. We hope this will help you decide if you’re still on the fence about it!
