But, what if you can’t wait for the new screens to get to you and you don’t want to keep all your doors and windows closed? Or, what if you find yourself in a friend’s house and they don’t have the screens?
Fear not; you can make a window screen replacement yourself surprisingly easy. It may not be as durable as the professional versions but it will certainly do until you get a replacement sorted.
Measure Your Window
Your window screen needs to fit onto the window frame. This means you’ll have to look at the outside of the window and identify the flattest section; it should be flat all the way around. This will be where you measure to get the length and the width your screen needs to be.
Don’t forget to take a look in case there is an existing track that the screen can sit in this will make installation even easier.
Make The Frame
You can make a frame from aluminum or wood. Obviously aluminum is lighter but it is a little harder to work with.
Make sure you buy or have enough f your frame material to cover the entire window.
Once you have them you can use your measurements to cut the frame to size. You’ll need either a hack saw or a good chop saw with the appropriate blade. Take your time with this part.
Make sure you cut away from yourself and take the appropriate safety precautions. It’s also a good idea to file all the cut ends; ensuring they stay smooth.
Connecting the Frame
The best way to do this is with corner inserts that are designed to hold the size of aluminum or wood you have. If you don’t have corner inserts you’ll have to use small battens across the corners that will allow you to secure them firmly together.
Attach The Mesh
Your mesh needs to sit on the frame you’ve just made. Place some mesh over the frame and use the frame as the template to cut the mesh. You can then glue the mesh to the frame you’ve made
Don’t forget to cut and trim and excess you’ve got; you’ll want to have a neat job when you’ve finished. It is important to pull the mesh tight as you fasten it.
You can also use staples or a metal spline to affix the mesh into position.
Magnets
To finish simply use self-adhesive magnetic strips on your frame and the window frame. The two should then click together effortless; allowing you to put them on and take them off whenever you want.
