Truly inclusive and inspirational

Independence Day Special Post Series : Tracking a truly inclusive (and definitely inspirational) educational institute : Super30

Even after more than 60 years of independent India, except for very mild cases, inclusiveness has visibly been ignored. The poor, the underprivileged are always struggling to fight for their ‘essential privileges’ of food, nutrition, health care and education. Inequality is acutely rising as I am typing and all the economic improvements are not reaching the farthest poor.

But, here is an exception. A true hero of the masses !Mr Anand and his Super30.

Super 30 is a highly ambitious and innovative educational program running under the banner of “Ramanujan School of Mathematics”. It hunts for 30 meritorious talents from among the economically backward sections of the society and shapes them for India’s most prestigious institution – the Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT). In the last seven years, it has produced hundreds IITians from extremely poor background. During this program students are provided absolutely free coaching, lodging and food. Super 30 targets students from extremely poor families. It is reflected in the group, which comprises wards of brick kiln worker, rickshaw puller, landless farmer, roadside vendor and the likes. They have all seen the
change with sheer disbelief in their eyes that their children are now going to be top technocrats.

US President Barack Obama’s special envoy to Organisation of Islamic Conference Rashad Hussain on Sunday visited Maths wizard Anand’s Super 30, an institute which supports the underprivileged students crack the prestigious IIT Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). Terming it a great initiative to bring about change, Hussain said: “Once I get back to the US, I will tell President Obama about the school. I am really touched to see the institute has done so well over the years.”

Conceptualised in 2002, the novel initiative has helped 212 students clear the IIT-JEE in the last eight years. And for the last three years, all the 30 students of the institute have made it to the IITs. What is remarkable about Super 30 is that most of the successful candidates have been from the underprivileged sections of society, many of them being first generation learners.

We have no financial support for Super 30 from any government as well as private agencies. We generate money on our own by running evening classes for intermediate level students who are interested in various engineering tests. We charge nominal fee which is less than 15% of any
other institutions.
