What is Vein Disease?
Veins are one of the most important aspects of the circulatory system. They carry the blood from the different parts of the body and bring it to the heart to load up on oxygen again. However, when people start aging, it can cause problems in the veins. When the veins start malfunctioning, it can lead to serious health complications. It is extremely common for Americans to have some kind of circulatory issue, more than one in three Americans have some kind of vein disease after they turn 45.
It is important to be aware of the possible symptoms early on. They might seem minor but it is important to get treatment early because the complications can be very serious, even causing death if they are not treated. What are the symptoms of vascular disease?
Chronic venous insufficiency happens when the veins don’t let blood get back to the heart. Though the arteries might be able to carry the blood to the legs and other extremities, if you have venous insufficiency, the blood simply can’t get back to the heart. Generally, this is caused by issues in the valves of the vein. When the valves are damaged, it causes the blood to pool in the legs. When it is left untreated, the legs get swollen, and there is a feeling of sincere pain.
If you notice you have varicose veins it could be a sign of vascular disease. Having feelings of tight calves or painful legs could also be a symptom.
What are the different kinds of vein disease?
There are a number of different vein disorders that are prevalent in Americans.
One of the most common is chronic venous disease, also known as CVD. CVD is a chronic condition that occurs when the veins are distressed or they become abnormal. If you have spider veins or varicose veins, leg swelling, skin changes in the legs or vascular malformation, you have chronic venous disease.
Deep Vein Thrombosis is also a vein issue that is caused by a blood clot getting stuck in the vein. This typically occurs in the lower leg, the thighs, or the pelvis. DVT can be extremely dangerous. More than 800,000 Americans suffer from DVT every year and it can be life-threatening. If you notice you have swelling, warmth or redness in a certain area in the leg, there may be a blood clot. If you have a family history of blood clots, are on hormone therapy, are pregnant, or had recent surgery, you may be at risk for DVT.
Lymphedema is another disease caused when the lymph node is blocked. When the vessels are obstructed, the lymph is unable to drain from fluid from the different tissues throughout the body. This prevents the immune cells from traveling to the different parts of the body where they are needed. If you are concerned about having one of these vein diseases, speak to the local doctor.
