Aside from your decor, walls, and furnishings, one element that often goes unconsidered is how much of an effect our windows have on the feel or “vibe” of a home. This is something that goes far beyond the view. The phrase “windows are the eyes of your home” may be a cliche, but it’s a cliche for a reason. This is why which curtains or blinds you choose can have such a profound impact on how your home feels to be in.
However, that does bring up a question: What should you be looking for in blinds & curtains? Well, that’s what we’re here to discuss today. To help you get started with some window dressing wisdom, let’s have a look at factors to consider when choosing blinds and curtains!
Get Functional
Before you hop online and frantically buy hundreds of dollars worth of window dressings, it’s important that you first look at your rooms from a practical perspective. Even taking style out of the equation, there are some window dressing types that will and won’t work depending on where they’re placed.
Take your bathroom, for example. Given that a room with a shower is going to be filled with moisture on a quite regular basis, choosing a fabric that absorbs a considerable amount of said moisture is going to quickly lead to some rather unpleasant issues, such as mould.
To avoid this, investing in some high quality blinds is going to be the better option. By having a window dressing made of wood, plastic, or other less porous material, you can ensure that you won’t have to quickly splash out for more blinds due to water damage.
Style Selection
If you’ve decided to read this far into a blog about choosing the ideal window dressings, I think it’s safe to assume that you care about your home’s interiors. So, with that in mind, style is going to be a very important decision. As with our previous point, it’s best to look to your home, rather than your own preferences.
That’s not at all to say that your preferences aren’t important. However, if your home already follows a distinct visual theme, it’s best to let that theme guide your window dressing choices. For example, if you have a consistent rustic aesthetic, adding hyper-modern curtains to that is likely going to be an eyesore, rather than an eye-catcher.
When it comes to your decor, you know what you love, and that is usually breathed into your interiors. So, go with the option that you prefer, just remember to take your windows’ surroundings into consideration.
Stay Consistent
If you, like I, spend way too much time reading interior design blogs, then you’ve likely read more articles about the “flow” of your rooms than you can count. While it does feel a little played at this point, the sentiment still stands. A house that feels aesthetically-consistent from room to room feels like a whole, rather than a variety of disparate parts. This is something to keep in mind when choosing your window dressings, as some blinds & curtains may work in some parts of your home but not in others.
Generally, this can be brought down to architecture. If the windows around your home are designed with different shapes and styles, it’s going to limit your options slightly. With that said, there are many companies that offer custom-fitted blinds and curtains in a wide array of styles, if you’d prefer that route. Obviously, the choice is yours. However, thinking about what style of blind would suit the most areas within your home will allow you to create a more consistent visual tone.
