Do you have a home security system that you have been using for years? Like any other electronic device, home alarm and security camera systems have a definite lifespan.
Proper maintenance can help maximize and prolong its usefulness. However, it is not designed to last forever.
How do you know when it is time for you to replace your system or have it upgraded? The following are some of the signs that you should not ignore:
1. The alarm is more than 15 years old
A well-maintained, high-quality security camera system is designed to last 20 years or more. However, technology changes quickly. Within a few short years, you can find alarm companies providing newer products with better features and services.
For example, it is now possible to find systems that are linked to the nearest police or fire station or that can send updates straight to your mobile phone.
One disadvantage of holding on to vintage technology involves the availability of parts. Over time, it becomes harder to find replacements, making repairs more expensive. In such instances, an upgrade or total replacement becomes a more practical choice.
2. It uses a wired system
Traditionally, door sensors, motion detectors and other similar devices were hardwired into the wall. With such a system, intruders could easily cut the wire to prevent triggering the alarm.
Newer, more modern systems utilize cellular transmitters to send and receive signals. This makes the system harder to infiltrate or corrupt.
Much like hardwired units, systems that utilize mobile signals do have their own vulnerabilities. By using a system that uses both cellular and wired components, you are making your home more secure than it would be with a system that relies on a single type of connection.
3. The wireless control panel uses 2G signals
Cellular technology becomes outdated over time, much like any other type of technology. So go for an upgrade if your system utilizes 2G signals. Wireless 2G systems are not designed to work with the newer 3G, 4G or 5G technologies.
As carriers are in the process of phasing out their 2G towers and replacing them with newer ones, it may only be a short time before your existing system becomes obsolete and unusable.
4. Renovations have been made to the home
Changes made to the home can make it more vulnerable to intrusions. Adding doors and windows can make a space look brighter and improve ventilation, but on the other hand, these new openings can offer burglars more opportunities to access your home.
If you did add openings, make sure to choose products that can help strengthen your home’s security (such as windows manufactured according to design standards that aim to reduce crime risk). Also, you will need to upgrade your home alarm system to accommodate those changes. This is to make sure that all the new potential entry points are further covered and protected against intrusions.
The same goes with adding extensions or renovating an existing space. Consider installing more motion sensors, smoke detectors and other security components. Think about upgrading or replacing your existing home security system if it is unable to accommodate these changes.
5. The alarm is quieter than before
Alarm and security systems are designed to give homeowners peace of mind. This is true for complete home security systems and not just burglar alarms. Your alarm should be sensitive enough to detect intrusions and be loud enough to alert you once it has gotten tripped. If your current home security system is unable to do this, you will need to consider upgrading it.
Consult a representative from your alarm installation company to see what options are available. Some companies may provide you with additional features or services for free if your current security equipment is still in relatively good condition.
