With society constantly evolving and adapting, parents are looking less to gender stereotyped bedrooms for their kids in favour for more neutral designs. This doesn’t mean neutral colours however, rather, bedrooms that don’t have an obvious boy or girl aesthetic. It can be difficult to strike the balance, but by following a few simple tips and tricks, you kids will have bedroom that perfectly represents their personality without conforming to the standard looks.
Colours
Forget about those tired blues and pinks, there is a whole spectrum of colours to work with so use them to your advantage. Reds and burnt oranges are ideal for creating a warm and cosy atmosphere. If you’re worried about introducing bold colours such as these, simply inject them subtly with accessories and textiles as opposed to wall colours. Similarly, olive greens and mustard yellows with white or beige create that delicate look with enough character to still have that youthful look.
Themes
When you imagine a girls and boys bedroom you’re likely to concur up thoughts of flowers or cars. A great gender neutral option is to go for animal prints. Whether this be wall stickers or bed linens, animal motifs are great for both boys and girls since they offer that dreamy, character filled look that both genders can get behind.
Rugs
Rugs are ideal for kids bedrooms since they are both practical and stylish at the same time. Rugs help to protect floors while also providing sound dampening and heat insulation properties. Since your kids are likely to spend a lot of time playing on the floor, bedroom rugs are essential for creating that softer feeling underfoot. In terms of appearance, look for patterend rugs that use the colours from the overall design scheme. With Scandinavian and boho influences still prominent in interior design, you couldn’t pick a more non-binary specific rug to go for than one with a pattern. Patterned rugs are great in kids rooms since they will be able to better hide those imperfections caused by food and drinks spills or crayons for example. Try to avoid thick, shaggier rugs. These have deeper piles that can trap dirt and dust easily as well as making those before mentioned spills harder to rectify. Look instead for shorter pile rugs that still offer the comfort, but are far easier to maintain.
Accessories
No interior look is complete without the use of clever accessories. More often than not, its the little things that can make or break a look and kids bedrooms are no different. As previously mentioned, when looking for cushions, furnitures and lighting fixtures, try to stray away from those typical gender specific items. Gender neutral bedrooms tend to have a much more mature look, which makes it easier for you to shop for, so take your own judgement as gospel. By no means does your child have to hide the fact that they like action toys or dollhouses, but investing in toy boxes or similar pieces to tidy away those toys will keep the room looking and feeling far more concise with its gender neutrality.
