What to Do with Your Stuff During a Home Remodel

What to Do with Your Stuff During a Home Remodel

You’ve gone through all of the necessary steps. You have your plan in place, you have a contractor and solid estimates, and you’ve even figured out how you are going to eat when your kitchen is torn apart and where you’re going to sleep when the bedroom is a mess.

However, there is one more thing to consider. Where are you going to put all of your furniture and other things while the remodel is going on? There are several options you can explore, but it needs to be part of your overall remodel strategy.

Here are some options you might want to explore when it comes to what to do with your stuff during a remodel.

Move it Around

This is a common option that people choose, and while it is not always the most convenient, they often do it out of necessity. What this option means is that you move things around inside your home during the remodel, putting furniture in an extra room, or piling two rooms of furniture into one to accommodate the remodel of another.

This does take a lot of work. It means being constantly engaged in the process and in constant contact with your contractor. On the other hand, you are present to keep an eye on things and see how work is going as well.

This also is the cheapest way to go. You aren’t paying someone extra to move or store your items, so you will save money. However, there is a risk. Moving things more frequently from room to room does mean you run the risk of breakage or damage to certain items. If you have expensive furniture and do not plan to refurnish for a while, you may want to explore other options.

Fill the Garage

Assuming you have a garage and it is not already full of other items, you can choose to fill your garage with the contents of your home, at least on a temporary basis. This does give the contractors room to work, and involves only moving the items once out and once back in, mitigating the risk of damage.

You can also hire professional movers to do this part for you, and it will be cheaper than if they had to move the items to another location. They will also wrap and protect them, and likely leave that protection in place until you are ready to move them back inside. This can be better than moving things around, and save you money over some other options.

Already have some items in the garage? You can look into storing your classic car or recreational toys elsewhere temporarily, as they will be easier to move than all of your furniture.

Still, if you need your garage or don’t have the space for everything you need to store, there are more options.

Store it All

If you don’t have room in your home, don’t want to move things several times, and don’t have the room in your garage or elsewhere on your property to store everything, you may want to just move it all to storage temporarily and move it back in when you are done.

This has several enticing advantages, but it is a more costly option. Still, there are some creative ways to keep all of your stuff out of the house, out of the way, and free from damage while your remodel is going on.

  • Use Pods: These are storage units that are brought to you, sit on your property or are moved to a secure storage area, and that you can rent short or longer term. This may be a great option, as they can substitute for the room you did not have in your garage.
  • Rent Local Storage: Rent a local storage unit, and have movers move your stuff out of your house and move it back in when the remodel is done.
  • Use the Mover’s Storage: Many moving companies also offer storage, and some will offer a package deal if you choose both services. The same company will be moving your stuff back in anyway, so it could work out really well.

Your remodel can also be seen as a great opportunity. You can rearrange furniture since it will all be moved out anyway, or you can even take the opportunity to refurnish, selling your old furniture and bringing in new, fresh furniture that better matches the remodeled style.

This can also simply be a great time to purge. You can remove things you don’t use anymore, selling or donating them, and remove things from storage that you simply don’t use anymore. Storing everything can serve you well in a number of ways.

Whatever you do will all of your stuff during a remodel, you simply need to have a plan before you get started. The contractors will thank you, and your stuff will be safe, clean, and remain free from damage during this process.
