With prom coming up, everyone is shopping for their dream dress, but whether you’re looking for a mermaid style gown, a plunging neckline, or a fun, flirty mini dress, you’ll want the perfect accessories to complement your look.
From jewelry to shoes, to shawls and bags, there are a lot of choices to make and a lot of potential mistakes. To make sure you avoid any issues and feel confident in your decisions, here are 5 tips we have on choosing the right accessories for prom night.
- Shoes
The shoes you wear to prom are incredibly important, but we spend so little time talking about them! JJ’s House designer Jessica has noticed that prom shoes are often chosen on looks alone, which can be a huge mistake.
“When you’re choosing shoes for prom, you have to make sure they’re comfortable, not just cute. You’ll be spending hours on your feet at prom, and uncomfortable heels will be the bane of your existence,” Jessica says.
Break in your shoes before prom and get some gel insoles to keep your feet happy while you dance the night away.
- Jewelry
You can get really playful with your jewelry when it comes to prom. Prom dresses come in every color, shape, and style these days, which means that your jewelry choices are wide open. Our biggest tip is to choose your jewelry based on the vibe you’re going for. If you have an elegant, black gown, look for minimalist, dripping pieces that accentuate your neck. If you have a fun minidress with a flippy skirt, choose some modern, art deco earrings for added fun.
It’s all about what makes you the most comfortable!
- Hair accessories
You are most likely getting your hair professionally done for prom, but even if you’re not, we doubt you’re going to wear it as you do every day. To keep your hairstyle in place, a lot of girls are opting to use hair accessories like combs, clips, or bejeweled headbands.
When choosing your hair accessories, you’ll want to make sure that you’re going for something that matches your overall style and will work with your hair. For example, you won’t want a faux flower crown if your dress is very black tie. Also, if you have very curly hair, you may find some of the bejeweled headbands an absolute nightmare when it comes to tangling.
- Outerwear
While you might be perfectly fine to go without a coat, if you live in a colder climate, you’ll probably want something to wrap around your shoulders that isn’t your everyday coat. For this, we recommend buying something that complements or contrasts your outfit. For example, you could have a girly dress paired with a leather motorcycle jacket. To stay traditional, get a warm shawl in a complementing color that you can wrap around your shoulders when the evening temperatures start to dip.
- Clutches
You’re still going to want to carry some money, your phone, and a bit of makeup or breath mints, and for that, you’ll need a clutch. Right now, we’re loving metallic clutches or bedazzled clutches. They stand out without clashing with your dress. Try not to choose anything too matchy-matchy and try to pick something you can use again later on. If you’ve been lucky enough to snag one of the cheap prom dresses you can buy online, you can drop a bit more money on your clutch and get something really outstanding.
