If you are looking for a new car (or a 2nd hand one for that matter) then getting value for money is what we all want. But with so much choice these days it’s often difficult to know which ones are the best. Here we are going to briefly look at 5 of the most common car categories to see which vehicles come out on top.
Small Cars

The best small car for value for money in our opinion is the Skoda Fabia, it’s effectively a budget version of the more expensive Volkswagen Polo. Also worth considering, the Ford Fiesta is a classic, having been around for so long and for a reason a solid, reliable car that’s not bad to drive. One to avoid would be the Nissan Micra, poor quality build, not a great drive, in recent years Nissan really have been focusing on the family and SUV market so no surprise that the Micra is not what it once was.

The SUV market is most definitely the fastest growing sector of the auto industry, you just need to look around any town to see this trend over the last decade or so to see this. As far as the affordable end of this market, we feel the clear winner is the ultra-popular Nissan Qashqai, as noted here it’s everywhere and has a strong 2nd hand market. We’ve also been impressed with the Toyota Rav 4, a good solid build and although unexciting it is very reliable.
Luxury Cars

OK so it may seem a little strange to be including a luxury car section in an article such as this, but there are some affordable fun cars out there on a budget. Our personal favorite is the classic Mazda MX-5, this little gem has been around for forever (it’s the 30 year anniversary) and with good reason, it’s fun compact and not that expensive. An honorable mention should be reserved for the Toyota Celica as well, another classic for those on a budget. Don’t worry if you are still struggling to afford one, it’s always easy to compare car loan rates online.
Saloon

The saloon car is still a favorite, especially in business and we’d all love to go with a Mercedes or Audio but if on a budget there are still some very good options out there. In this category we feel the Skoda Superb is the best choice for the budget-minded coming in at not even 2/3 of the cost of an Audi A6, it handles perfectly and looks and feels great. Also worth noting is the classic choice of the Ford Mondeo, a clear winner for year after year, it is unexciting perhaps but always a good choice.
People Carriers

It feels a little wrong to be putting another Ford into this category but the Ford Galaxy is a clear winner here, it has a comfortable 7 seats where even the rear row can accommodate adults, unlike some others. It has a smooth ride beyond what you’d expect at the price point and lots of storage space as well.
