4 Tips for Making Friends in Your New Apartment Community

If you just moved or have been at your new apartment community for just a few months, it can be difficult to meet new friends, especially as an adult. Gone are the days of just meeting up at parties to get to know everyone. We’ve got responsibilities, and making friends just seems so much more difficult. That’s why I’ve put together a list of awesome tips to help you get out and meet your neighbors.

  1. Bring Them Cookies

If your neighbors come over while you’re moving in, it can be an easy way to make acquaintances, but what if you don’t see them? I know people who’ve gone almost a year before introducing themselves, and at that point, it’s just awkward. One great way to break the ice is to stop over with cookies or a pie, depending on where your baking prowess rests. This tip is sure to get you a warm welcome.

  1. Do the Things You Love

This is as simple as getting out and enjoying yourself. Do you love warm weather? Head out to your apartment’s BBQ area or pool and chat up the neighbors. If you’re cooking burgers, offer them one and they’ll feel even more welcome. If you love to garden, talk to your property manager about getting one started, and others will certainly join in.

If you love art, find a class nearby that teaches different techniques or styles. Not only will you become a better artist, but you’ll also meet new local friends who have similar interests. It’s much easier to make friends and have great conversations when you’re sharing a common hobby with one another.

  1. Check Out Community Events

Want to meet people in your community? Attend community events! For starters, most modern apartment communities hold holiday events, coffee hours, block-parties, and other fun get-togethers where you can meet your neighbors. Your entertainment lounge will usually have information about these and other local events posted or they will be on the community website. Confused about what to ask or how to begin a conversation? check out the best questions to kick start from this guide.

You can also use social media to find out what’s going on in your neighborhood. Local theatres, breweries, sporting clubs, concert venues, and much more usually post their events to Facebook or another social platform, making them easy to find. You’re bound to bond with a few members of your community if you attend one of your neighborhood’s many gatherings.

  1. Be Friendly

It may sound like a given, but in today’s busy world, especially in large cities, we often get caught up in the hustle of every-day life and forget how to be neighborly. Compliment your neighbors on a new haircut or necklace. Hold the door, smile and strike up a conversation when you see someone familiar. Not everyone will be receptive, but those who do just might turn into lifelong friends.
