4 Things To Be Careful Of This Holiday Season

When people think about the holiday season, they usually think about jolly decorations, hot cocoa and Christmas cheer.  Rarely do people think about accidents or getting hurt.  However, on the contrary, the holiday season is one of the most common times for people to get injured.

Although it may seem like a paradox since it’s the time of the year when we’re relaxing and having fun, injuries and accidents are at their peak.

Here are some of the most important things to be careful for this year.

Drunk Drivers

The holiday season means a spike in alcohol consumption.  Whether it’s a holiday lunch or ringing in the New Year, there’s no shortage of boozy drinks this time of year. It’s important to be extra aware of people driving drunk on the road.

In addition to protecting yourself through driving defensively, you should also avoid alcohol before operating your vehicle.  If you’re going to attend an event which will have alcohol, be sure to plan on taking a cab home or arranging a ride with a sober friend.

Falling From High Surfaces

Ask any emergency room nurse what some of the most common injuries are during the holiday season, and you’ll be sure to hear that falling off ladders, tables, and other high surfaces are on the top of the list.

When you’re hanging Christmas lights or putting the star on the top of your eight-foot Christmas tree, be careful!  Use a ladder instead of a chair or something which isn’t designed to handle the weight of a body.  If you use a ladder, make sure that you’re wearing sturdy shoes and haven’t been drinking any alcohol!

Theft

Unfortunately, theft and crime are at their peaks during the holidays.  People carrying around valuables in their cars during the season doing their shopping may be especially targeted for robbery.

If you’re shopping and leaving your purchases in your car, be sure to put them in the trunk where potential thefts can’t see what you’ve bought. There’s nothing worse than getting back to your car and seeing that your windows have been broken and all of your gifts have been stolen.

 Family Arguments

The holidays are a common time for families to get into arguments despite the idea of it being a time to spread the love.  Because there can be so many ranging emotions during the holidays and alcohol can be a factor, unresolved family issues can come up.

Try to stay calm and keep things lighthearted.  There’s no need to let your holidays be ruined by unfinished family business.  Stay calm and be the bigger person if you want to avoid conflicts between family members.
