The prices are also much better in the offseason so there is an added incentive to go to the popular tourist spots then.
3. Go where the locals go
If you can’t avoid going to Italy when the crowds are there in the high season then you can still get away from it all by going like a local. There are so many places in Italy that offer a fantastic experience that is off the tourist path.
For instance, if you love Roman history and get a thrill from seeing ruins and artifacts, then a trip to Aquileia in Friuli is a great way to experience them without the crowds. It was once a thriving Roman port that was important during the Empire and now sits undiscovered by the tourists.
There are small villages all over the coast and in the mountains where life looks like they were trapped in time and there is no tourist in sight. The locals know where to go so follow them to your out-of-the-way destination.
