Technology is at its boom and every day we come across new inventions that changing the global landscape. One of the most popular technologies even invented is the Global Positioning System (GPS) that have revolutionized the concept of navigation. Gone are the days when hard-copy maps were used to find directions. GPS systems are now utilized to locate places. However, this is not the only use. A wide range of industries have resorted to the usage of GPS to enhance their functions in number of ways.
There are over 30 navigation satellites in the space that can tell us exactly where we are. GPS is a network of these satellites which was originally established by the American government for navigation of armed forces. But now, anyone with a GPS device can receive the signals and utilize the facility to the fullest.

GPS system comprises of three basic parts; satellites, receivers and ground station. Just like stars in constellation, we know that where the satellites are supposed to be at a given point in time. However, ground stations utilize the radar to ensure the position of satellites. On the other hand, receivers are operating constantly looking for signals from the satellite. The receiver detects at least four operational satellites. The satellites then send microwaves to the receiver where the processor calculates the precise distance from each of the four satellites and triangulates the exact position on planet based on these distances.
GPS in everyday life
As mentioned above, GPS is one of the most important technologies utilized today. From having cheap RV GPS available to other types, there is a wide variety available in the market than can be utilized.
There is a number of important things that can be carried out using the GPS technology. Here are the major applications listed:
- GPS is commonly used for navigational purposes. GPS trackers are now widely available in the market that can be used to track a number of things. It can even be used to track a location of a person. This can be especially used to keep a look on elderly people who might be victimized by dementia.
- Aviation industry have been utilizing this technology for many years. GPS devices are installed in aircrafts so the commanding station can keep a track of the vehicle. In conjunction with vhf airband transceivers, GPS technology ensures precise and reliable communication and navigation for aircraft, enhancing both safety and efficiency in the skies. In fact, aviation industries are so reliant on this technology that it is impossible to survive without them.
- Preventing crimes like car-theft has been easier with the assistance of GSP trackers. Trackers are installed in vehicles to locate them easily in case they are stolen. This has created a sense of fear in potential criminals preventing crime to a great extent.
Conclusion
This is how GPS works and how it is applied in the industry. Nevertheless, these were not enough examples to emphasize on its importance in this current day and age. Modern industries are highly dependent on this technology to carry out a variety of functions.
